Most times, when we transition from high school to college, there is a shift in our focus where we begin concentrating more intensely on the academic aspects of college and end up foregoing little things that make us happy and content through our days. If not for all, that was my experience, at least. Moving into college, I ended up pushing aside my hobbies because they didn’t really fit into the grind culture that my college education pushed into me, so the little bursts of joy I would usually experience when I would finish a good book or a really stimulating puzzle soon started to become a memory of the past. 

But last year, inspired by a few close friends, I picked up a crochet hook to learn the craft and realized I terribly missed those little moments of peace that my hobbies would bring me back in high school. College can be immensely stressful to pursue regardless of how good of a student you are, so this is my gentle nudge to you to hold onto your hobbies. They help you to recalibrate your emotions after a long week of work and studies and allow you to be much more attuned to your emotional needs.

And if you feel like you are not sure what your hobbies may be, here are 3 you could explore as you navigate through college.

Crochet: 

If you are interested in hobbies that are hands-on and you can build on and improve upon, crochet is a delightful one that you can learn using just a hooked needle and create beautiful and intricate patterns and designs with yarn. Fabric art can seem intimidating to learn, but it offers a perfect blend of relaxation and productivity, allowing you to craft unique items such as soft toys, fashion accessories, room decor, etc. You can also do low-intensity multitasking when you crochet, such as listening to your favourite podcast episode, catching up on an audiobook, listening to your favourite album, and so much more. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, I believe crochet provides a therapeutic and enjoyable way to express your creativity by producing some pleasing pieces that you will be in awe of.

Bookbinding:

Bookbinding is just as hands-on of a hobby as crochet since it involves creating and binding your own books! It allows you to craft personalized journals, sketchbooks, and albums, which can give you a sense of accomplishment and also give you a tangible result for your efforts. It can also be a rewarding way to preserve memories and showcase your individual style when you’re making a gift for someone or even for yourself. And you can fill up the empty nooks in your bookcase with your handmade bookbinding projects!

Gardening:

Gardening with potted plants is another low-effort but accessible hobby that you can explore! It brings a little bit of nature into your space, which is always good for your mental health. You can also focus on herbs for your kitchen – it allows you to enjoy the satisfaction of growing your own fresh herbs for cooking. This hobby is not only fun but also practical because it helps you create a connection to nature while adding a touch of freshness and flavour to your everyday life. Whether you have a small balcony, a sunny windowsill, or, even better yet, a spacious backyard or a garden, exploring gardening with potted plants and kitchen herbs can be a fulfilling and enjoyable project.

Hobbies can help regulate and stabilize our emotional and mental wellness needs by allowing us to take some time away from stressful activities. It allows us to build and foster communities so we can build a supportive space for our mental wellness. Last, but not least, hobbies encourage you to build upon a skill you enjoy partaking in. So if you have been holding back, I urge you to slowly get back into your hobbies or explore a new one!
