5 Ways to Move your Body!


In the past few months, I’ve been focusing on trying different strategies to care for my mental health. I’ve been reading up on ways to reduce anxiety, and one thing that stood out for me was the benefits of exercise. I was a bit hesitant at first because I always thought of exercise as an intense gym session, but I’ve come to realize it is so much more than that! Exercise can take many forms, and it’s basically just moving your body in any way that feels right for you. 

These are a few ways to move your body: 

  1. Walking – Walking is a wonderful way to clear your mind and move your body. You can try going for a walk around the block or a nature hike. Don’t worry too much about the length of this walk, just go for as long as it feels right. You can also listen to a podcast or your favourite playlist! 

  1. Yoga – Practicing yoga is an excellent method to gain a deeper understanding of the connection between your mind and body. This practice gives you a space to focus on your breathing, be in the present moment, relieve muscle tension,and give your body a well-deserved rest. The best part is that you can do it in the comfort of your home and find lots of free videos on YouTube.

  1. Sports – Spring is here, and the nice weather is upon us! Try getting together with friends to play sports (e.g. soccer, badminton, frisbee) at a local park. You can choose to play competitively or just for fun; either way, this is a great way to move your body and connect with friends! 

  1. Dance – Dancing is a great way to lift your mood, let loose and express yourself. You can try following along dance videos (e.g. Zumba, hip hop, salsa) or playing your favourite songs and having an at-home dance party 🙂 

  1. Home/Gym Workout – Workouts can be fun too! You can try a 15 min workout at home or the gym, just play some great music and do exercises that feel right for you. 

Discovering new ways to move my body has been comforting. I’ve let go of preconceived ideas of what working out should look like, and now I do exercises based on my needs and mood. I have also noticed the positive impacts on my mental health, which makes me excited to continue on this journey!
